Read-only diagnostics for Smallworld GIS
A GIS database can look perfectly fine and still hide inconsistencies. SEPM DataCheck scans your Smallworld database, identifies known data-quality issues and gives you a clear report of what needs attention.
Smallworld administrators and GIS specialists who want to find suspicious conditions before upgrades, migrations, exports or data-model changes.
Currently available for Smallworld. Support for PostGIS and other GIS environments is planned.

Before & after
Smallworld databases can accumulate hidden inconsistencies over time — from invalid geometries and coordinate-system definitions to corrupt styles or unexpected field values.
Before“Why is my data doing this?”
After“0 errors. Good night.”

What it is
A GIS database may look perfectly fine in everyday use while still containing inconsistencies that only become visible during upgrades, migrations, exports or unusual workflows.
SEPM DataCheck is a read-only diagnostic tool for Smallworld GIS that systematically searches for known database and configuration issues.
It does not modify your data. Instead, it scans the system, reports its findings and creates a consolidated logfile for further analysis.
Where hidden issues surface
Systematically searches the database for known database and configuration issues.
Reports how many records were examined and how many findings were detected.
Writes a consolidated logfile for further analysis.
Where it comes from
DataCheck grew out of SEPM's experience with real Smallworld support cases. Instead of investigating the same difficult database problems repeatedly, SEPM turns suitable findings into reusable diagnostic checks.
The original concept is simple: a growing library of scripts for detecting Smallworld database issues, based on problems encountered in SEPM support.
A difficult database problem appears in a real Smallworld system.
SEPM works out what went wrong and why.
Suitable findings become a diagnostic check.
Every check can now run against any database.
What it looks for
Current checks cover areas such as data and field validation, geometry and database configuration.

The library keeps growing as new support cases become reusable checks.
DataCheck can also collect geometry statistics. These are informational diagnostics rather than errors and can help you understand unusual characteristics of a database before they become problems.
Spot unusually short or long line geometries.
See how complex geometries really are.
Understand the spread of area geometries.
Built for scale
DataCheck turns a large Smallworld database into something much easier to reason about: records checked, issues found, and a logfile showing where to look.
SEPM test run
0.22%of records need attention
Across multiple diagnostic checks in one current SEPM test run.
Geometry statistics engine
Scanned in a single shared pass for broader geometry analysis.
Read-only by design
DataCheck helps administrators and GIS specialists find suspicious conditions while leaving the database untouched.

Clear results
Each check has its own stable DataCheck identifier, such as SDC-GEOM-001 or SDC-STYLE-002. A run reports how many records were examined and how many findings were detected, while detailed results are written to a tab-separated logfile.
So instead of
“Something seems wrong with this database.”
you get
“This check examined these records, found these issues, and here is where they are.”
| check_id | collection | record | finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| SDC-GEOM-001 | cable | 48213 | free geometry |
| SDC-GEOM-001 | busbar | 10977 | free geometry |
| SDC-STYLE-002 | cabinet | 3312 | corrupt RWO style |
| SDC-STYLE-002 | substation | 775 | missing substyle |
